Unable to send email from BlackBerry when using SSL on the MDaemon server Print

  • 0

If you have integrated your MDaemon account with a BlackBerry smartphone using the MDaemon BIS integration feature and MDaemon is configured to use SSL with its SMTP service, you may be unable to send an email from the BlackBerry smartphone.

This is a known issue with BlackBerry Internet Service, as per this Knowledge Base article on the BlackBerry website:

KB21911 - Unable to send email messages using MDaemon Email Server that is configured to use SMTP with SSL

BlackBerry developers are aware of this issue, and they are working on a solution. There is currently no timeframe for when this issue will be resolved.

If you are experiencing this problem; you will attempt to send an email from the BlackBerry smartphone, the message will display a red X, and the error 'Message included an invalid address' will be displayed.

On the MDaemon server, in the SMTP-in log, you will see an SMTP session that looks similar to this:

Wed 2010-06-03 09:53:24: Session 29; child 3; thread 0
Wed 2010-06-03 09:53:24: Accepting SMTP connection from [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:56375] to [yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy:465]
Wed 2010-06-03 10:03:19: Connection timed out!
Wed 2010-06-03 10:03:19: * SSL error 995 The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.
Wed 2010-06-03 10:03:19: SMTP session terminated (Bytes in/out: 0/0)

Or like this:

Wed 2010-06-03 08:57:02: Session 1989; child 1; thread 0
Wed 2010-06-03 08:57:02: Accepting SMTP connection from [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:54136] to [yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy:465]
Wed 2010-06-03 09:02:02: * SSL error 10054 An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Wed 2010-06-03 09:02:02: SMTP session terminated (Bytes in/out: 0/0)

Once you have determined that this is the issue you are experiencing, you can enable STARTTLS to negotiate an encrypted SMTP session rather than use the dedicated SSL port as a work-around. To do so, open the MDaemon console and follow these steps:

  1. Click Setup
  2. Click BlackBerry
  3. Disable (uncheck) the option Use SSL port beside the SMTP server field
  4. Enable (check) the option SMTP and IMAP servers use STARTTLS whenever possible
  5. Delete and recreate the email profile on the BlackBerry device
