This article explains how to view or change the settings for the length of time SecurityGateway retains the message-source of messages that pass through it. Keeping messages for a longer period of time allows administrators to have more information to review for troubleshooting purposes, but also increases the amount of disk-space used on the server's hard drive.
From the Dashboard, after logging into SecurityGateway with a global administrator account:
- Click on Setup/Users in the lower-left hand corner
- Locate the Database Maintenance section
- Click on Data Retention
You will see a number of options related to how long SecurityGateway will retain information regarding the database, SMTP sessions, and messages sent to and from the server:
- 'Message Database Records'
This is where you can configure how long SecurityGateway maintains information regarding the number of messages that were sent through the server, what score they got, if they were passed along or rejected, and so forth. Select 'Take no action' to retain them forever, or select 'Delete records after __ day(s)' and enter the number of days you wish to retain the data. - 'Message Content'
By default, SecurityGateway deletes the content of messages once it is no longer needed, such as when the message is delivered succesfully to the recipient or deleted from the quarantine. If you wish to retain message content, check the boxes for the situations in which you wish to retain the content. - 'Message Transcripts'
SecurityGateway's session transcripts are similar to logs on your email server; this is where information regarding the SMTP traffic and message processing for every session the server handles is logged. By default, SecurityGateway retains session transcripts for the same length of time as it stores database records, but you can set it to a different retention schedule or not save them at all.
Note that choosing to not store message transcripts at all can make it difficult to troubleshoot issues that may arise when email is sent or received from SecurityGateway. - 'Bandwidth Information'
SecurityGateway stores information regarding the bandwidth used to send and receive messages, and it can be reviewed by Administrators using the Reports section. If you wish to limit the time this data is kept, check the box and specifiy the number of days to retain this information.
Additional Comments
Database maintenance occurs each night at midnight, according to the settings specified. Note that these settings are global, and cannot be specified by domain. Only global administrators have access to this section.
